Spelling out Love

The L is a ladder of tenderness
that can lift us on a level with heaven
as well as guide our hearts to sorrow,
taking soul and pain to bitterness.

The O, what is it? It's sweetness,
it's fire, it's flowing water, a kiss, a duel,
the spine of pleasure and of sleeplessness,
the laughter from pain and the torture.

The V has in its sugary belly
the cinders of an agonizing bonfire
with a green scarf at its side.

The E? It's the failure that threatens.
It's a faithless fire badly put out,
the crib and the tomb of the lover.
